The 13 year popular music cycle theory

At first glance, trends and sounds in popular music seem come at us random fractalized bursts.  Viewed up close, that’s how it appears.  But if you’re to stand back–far back–patterns begin to emerge.  And these patterns have held surprisingly true over the last sixty years.

I just love this music geek guy... "Alan Cross". He must have a PHD in "popular music"... he lives and breathes the stuff and has for over 35 years, working in the Canadian radio broadcasting business. Originally from Manitoba, he started his music career in Winnipeg at CKUW cira 1980. He is very active in the international music writing scene (eg: The Ongoing History of  New Music). Pickup Profile: Duane Allman

Duane Allman was a shooting star... his recording career lasted only seven years, but that short burst of energy illuminated a whole new world.

The raw energy, improvisatory derring-do and melodic brilliance have made Duane Allman’s sound a favorite among guitar fans and a staple of rock radio for decades. On today’s episode of the Pickup, blues guitarist, Joe Bonamassa reveals his top five Duane Allman tracks and one of them is also Eric Clapton’s all-time favorite guitar solo!   HOY April 18, 2015

The Weekly OBG - "Oldie But Goodie"

"Street Fighting Man" is a song by English rock and roll band The Rolling Stones featured on their 1968 album Beggars Banquet. Called the band's "most political song", Rolling Stone magazine ranked the song #301 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

"What can a poor boy do? 'cept play for a rock and roll band..."  - A classic "protest" song from the 60's!   HOY April 22, 2015

Belief and betrayal in Mali

A long and powerful read about "desert blues" from the Atavist Magazine... Mali through the lens of two friends who started a music festival that attracted some of the biggest rock stars in the world. That friendship would then be severed by ideology when one turned to radical Islam. A personal story as much as one about geopolitics.   HOY May 09, 2015

The Americana Music Triangle

How is it that here, in the tiny triangle between Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans, nine distinct genres of music came to life?

Welcome to the birthplace of American Blues, Jazz, Country, Rock & Roll, Gospel/Southern Gospel, Cajun/Zydeco, Soul, R&B and Bluegrass!   HOY May 11, 2015

Timmy Thomas - Why Can't We Live Together?

Interestingly, this was one of the last "mono" recordings made (1972) as the music world was shifting to the "stereo" recording format...

TT is one of my favorite R&B artists. WCWLT has an understated vocal, a prophetic lyric coupled with superb percussion and B3 organ layers; so fresh and powerful, it stirs the soul! Music becomes art in moments like this!  HOY May 11, 2015
